Description

:iconviosterra:

Name: Gawain Taeg
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Height: 5'9"
Country: Kandera
Element: Earth
Faction: Quasers
Rank: Recruit
Stats:
Str 8 / Mag 30 / Vit 12 / Spd 0 / Sp 0/

Weapon: **Retractable Three-Pronged Flail
Made out of a rather durable but light steel, Gawain wields three-pronged bladed flails mounted on retractable wires.

Expertise: Support Battler: At the moment, Gawain can be classified as a jack of all trades, and a master of none. He can heal, but he's by far not the best nor an ideal healer-- and he can fight, but he's not the best at that either, and can sometimes get in the way more than he can help. He tends to act as a supporter in the background, at least until he's learned a little more about the reality of the world. Perhaps in the end, he may find himself on an expertise path that has nothing to do with fighting or healing at all......?

Personality:
--- | likable | kind | passionate | obsessive | silver-tongued | conniving | dishonest | unforgiving | greedy | --->

Being a generally easy-going and good-humored guy, Gawain is quite pleasant to be around thanks to what seems like the traces of a smile eternally etched onto sharp but handsome features, as well as few inhibitions when it comes to having a good laugh. He's been brought up with a sense of good tact and manners, with what seems like a down-to-earth, level head on his shoulders. But with such a standard set of agreeable traits, he tends to fade into the background against those who have stronger personalities. He's the guy who usually sits in the shadows supporting those in the limelight, lending a listening ear and some well-intended advice. But he doesn't mind that; in fact, he prefers it. It leaves more room for him to do his own thing, though letting him slither around in the background is not always necessarily a good thing.

When left to his own devices, Gawain's usual attempts to distance himself from falling victim to his destructive obsessiveness begin to falter, and he's not so much diligent as much as he becomes very passionate about things. He'll quietly try to monopolize whatever it is that he wants for himself, without much care for consequences suffered by others. While he may be quite caring and generous in all other areas, the particular thing that ignites his almost manic fixations must belong to him and only him or he will be unsatisfied until it is either his, or destroyed so that nobody else can have it. He tends to continue his obsession until the quality that piqued his interest fades-- or until he breaks whatever it is that caught his eye. In the former, he will leave his toy behind without much second thought of the desolation he may have wrought-- but in the latter, he may feel the slightest twinge of regret, and a sense of guilt that has now made him aware of the effects of his selfishness, and drives him to avoid growing too interested in any one specific thing.

With friends, Gawain becomes, rather than pleasant, almost sassy and his eternal smile dark and calculating-- but in exchange for friends letting his sharp remarks slide, he'll also let jokingly snide remarks slip or tease with good nature. He becomes markedly more genuine and relaxed, both in expression, conversation, and posture, and while he's not the type to think twice about sacrificing a few friends in favor of things that he wants, he does value his comrades as things that he considers 'his'.
He has no friends :iconkruemelplz:

History:
Hailing from a comparatively well-to-do family in Kandera, rather than being subjected to the toils of farm labor, Gawain was instead subjected to the toils of servitude. His father and mother were both high-class servants in the house of the Queen, though did not serve her directly. Rather, they ran the complex background work along with other more intelligent and capable servants of their nature, and it was expected for Gawain to follow in his family's footsteps. Poise and a quick wit to avoid trouble were valued above loyalty and love, and in the bustling castle, Gawain flourished as a young servant. His attention to detail and ability to charm anyone he came across with a few flowery lies became highly valued, and he became rather well liked in the back-rooms, talking everyone into a misguided affection for the seemingly harmless young boy. When it began, he can't recall-- but he took where he could, slipping a single floret of broccoli from a plate, or miscounting the dinner rolls and blaming another for the mistake-- and indeed it soon became that Gawain had no interest in reaping the rewards of his little prizes. He cared not for a half empty stomach, nor for a slip of smooth fabric. What Gawain cared about was the feeling of owning it.

While his silver-tongue left few suspecting him of his little deceits, Gawain would take no risks. He took it upon himself to seek out a guard, convincing him to teach him basic fighting and swordplay so that he could defend himself (or more accurately, silence offending parties) in the unlikely case that someone discovered his treachery, the scale of which had begun to escalate as he grew older. Having been brought up as a servant all his life, Gawain was no natural fighter-- but just as he'd poured himself into the mastery of serving, he insisted upon excelling at battle. It was here he was to face his first disappointment however, as no matter how he worked, his young body was not yet strong enough to best a guard. Recommended to hone his magic instead, Gawain took up study on his own time, and came to lose interest in the servant life. Much to the dismay and discontent of his parents, the boy had found his new passion, and abandoned all else to throw himself into mastering a magic that could prevail over his first failure where his physical body could not. It was here, with another student that he flourished in study and perhaps fell a little bit in love. His first and only love, and their dabbles in magic, were the only things in Gawain's world at the time, a period that seemed more like a dream than anything else.

But perfect situations must go wrong. Years later on the day that he mastered his magic studies to a level of passable proficiency, and subsequently the day that he defeated the guard who had set him down so long ago, Gawain awoke from his dream. He realized that his controlling nature, his desire to be the sole owner of his interests had ruined his love, who was now a lonely soul dependant on the very man who had driven away all their friends and family. But that man, Gawain, had lost all interest in them. His broken love was nothing like the one full of life and curiousity in the world that he'd originally coveted-- and though he was acutely aware that it was his fault, Gawain fled. He ran from his tutelage, his family, his servitude, and the godforsaken castle. For a teen who had neither become a servant nor fulfilled enough training to be a guard, Gawain was nobody. He was not sorely missed, despite the complications in slipping out, and Gawain found himself alone in the face of the outside world. Wanting to go far away from familiar faces, he travelled by merchant caravan to the second island, learning through great difficulty the skills needed to live on his own. But while suffering at times, the experience was bolstered by his curiousity of this new realm, this new perspective. He was careful to keep moving so as to not ignite his passions again, but on his travels he was surprised at the stark contrast of the world around him now as compared to the lavish world of the Queen. It was here he learned that giving was not necessarily a bad thing. While he would still take as he pleased with a swift hand and honeyed words, he gave that which he did not need, or more specifically that which he did not want and had merely taken on whim. He was a selfish man, but only towards those things that he coveted. To all other things, he found that he thought them trivial and without worth-- perfect for bestowing upon those who needed, and those who could perhaps later aid him in getting the things he really wanted.

And so Gawain learned that generosity could build a good name, and after establishing himself as an upstanding ally of the poorer citizens, he learned of the Quasers and the Erius Knights. Stories of the trouble they brought with their various battles, their raids, and how glad everyone was that they were under a tentative peace. It was the newest mystery that would pique Gawain's interest. He sought to know all he could about both factions, though information was relatively scarce in the peasant fields. Their general foundations were well known however, and one thing attracted Gawain to the Quasers: their desire for equality. Now Gawain had no desires whatsoever for equality. But a little man like him stood very little chance of getting a foothold of power in a country like Kandera without a little help. What better a place to start-- than in an organization that had the power to knock the monarchy down to size? All he needed was a little hole, an opening in the fabric of Kandera's politics that would give him his chance to own more than he'd ever dreamed of. And so with a distant ideal to preoccupy his untameable passions, he aimed to enlist with less than pure intents.

Extra info:
- **For an example of how his weapon works, here's a bit of a video revealing my extreme nerdiness: [link]
- He hasn't quite realized that he can have even more than what he could get from Kandera just by ranking up inside of the Quaser faction, but just wait until he does....

Skill: Govannon's Gavel: This is a support skill, one which Gawain primarily uses on himself. (because he's a selfish bastard :iconlizard2plz:) It causes earth and metals to grow denser and subsequently heavier. He has a rather proficient mastery at the use of this skill due to the fact that he's essentially useless without it, and can use this skill on any metal object within a 10' radius of himself. The speed of the change in density depends on the size of the weapon, and with normal sized swords, the change can be quite spontaneous. Thus the skill takes it's namesake from the fact that Gawain likes to use it to throw his weapons overhead his opponents, and then cast this skill upon the metal to drop it like a gavel upon his enemy, rather than using his own, less impressive strength.

Skill: Dittany of Dis: This is a bit of a double-edged healing skill, that allows Gawain to summon a special flower from the palm of his hand. The blossom will absorb one and only one wound per summon, and as the wound is extracted from the victim, the white petals turn black. The wound is sustained within the dittany until it wilts-- and unless Gawain happens to be so generous as to take the damage himself, (which he almost never is,) the wound will reappear on it's original owner when the blossom dies. As each petal falls from it's base, the wound will slowly reappear bit by bit until the last petal is left, and only at that point will the wound begin to heal normally. The dittany can store a wound for up to one day, but Gawain often doesn't waste his magic on that and summons flowers that sustain only for a few hours. His magic can usually summon up to 3 or 4 flowers at once, depending on their given longevity.

Special: Terranova: Softening the earth around him, or perhaps above if underground, Gawain can fashion giant stalagmites or stalactites respectively. These earthen structures erupt either out of the ground, or fall from the ceiling. Activation of this skill requires him to have time to remotely cast runes over the locations each stalagmite will appear, as they must all be triggered at the same time. Being interrupted/injured during rune cast will automatically trigger any runes he's set down, and ends the skill whether he was finished or not. The size of the stalagmites depends on how many runes he's set down, and how much his magic can spread across them. After using Terranova, Gawain will fall into a feverish illness from being drained of his magic, and will be unable to use any of his skills until the fever goes down. Any healing from Dittany of Dis will instantly expire upon Terranova's termination, and all flowers will wilt and return their injuries to their original owners.

Can I skip the Flail, I think I'd prefer his sword.
